Pain is interwoven in the fabric of life. In one form or the other and at some time or another, we shall all experience pain. Yet, one of medicine?s great paradoxes is the undertreatment of pain. Recent statistics show that 70% or more of patients do not receive adequate treatment for their pain. Biases, myths, unreasonable fear of drug addiction and lack of knowledge on the part of health care professionals constitute a barrier to effective pain control.

Nothing tries the human soul so much as pain. Unrelieved pain produces unnecessary suffering that is harmful to physical and psychological well being. Inadequate treatment of pain slows the healing process, lengthens hospital stays and increases the size of medical bills.

The Pain Drug Handbook is a compilation of drugs used singly or in combination with other drugs and techniques, in the management of acute, chronic and cancer pain. Also included are therapeutic guidelines for various pain syndromes and a tradename list for rapid retrieval of generic drug names.

Familiarity with the pharmacology of these drugs used singly or in combination will enable better treatment of pain and improvement in the quality of life.

This knowledge should complement other efforts at treating the whole person and relieving the stresses in life, which compound the illnesses and malignancies that produce pain.

For many patients, this book comes too late. For millions more, it is my hope that this book shall be a beacon of light in the darkness of their pain and suffering.
